Alta Loma Elementary Students Celebrate National Literacy Month with H-E-B Book Giveaway

Alta Loma Elementary Students Celebrate National Literacy Month with H-E-B Book Giveaway

San Angelo ISD continued our month-long celebration of National Literacy Month today with a fun book giveaway by H-E-B at Alta Loma Elementary. Thanks to H-E-B, each Alta Loma pre-kindergartener, kindergartener, 1st grader and 2nd grader received their very own book to take home as a gift, and students were treated to a special visit by H-E-Buddy to inspire a love of reading.

Alta Loma Principal Lauri Herndon expressed her appreciation of the generous gift by H-E-B. “Thank you, H-E-B, for supporting our Alta Loma community and sending home a brand new book with our students to share with their families. Excited readers are better readers!”

September is National Literacy Month, a time to encourage young people to go to the library, pick up a good book and explore new worlds, a message which aligns well with the mission of both SAISD’s San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative and the H-E-B Read 3 program. The District is proud to partner with H-E-B on San Angelo Reads! and to support the H-E-B Read 3 program, which focuses on educating parents and caregivers about the need to read to their children a minimum of three times per week. H-E-B is celebrating the 10th birthday of the program launched by the grocery company in 2011.

The San Angelo Reads! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by the San Angelo ISD in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.

“H-E-B is proud to be able to partner with SAISD and San Angelo READS!,” said H-E-B partner Caitie Cannady. “H-E-B has been passionate about education in Texas since 1905 and promoting reading among our youth as a fun activity the whole family can enjoy through our Read 3 program and the San Angelo READS! initiative goes hand in hand with our mission to encourage reading at least 3 times a week. We are so excited we could donate books to the pre-k through 2nd grade students at Alta Loma Elementary in celebration of National Literacy Month and our Read 3 program’s 10th birthday!”
